Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to our most frequently asked questions.
Is it normal for lights to flicker when appliances turn on?
Sometimes yes. Many appliances draw a surge of electricity when they start, which can briefly dim nearby lights. However, frequent flickering may indicate overloaded circuits or loose electrical connections.
Why does my heater smell like burning when it first turns on?
In many cases this is simply dust burning off heating components after sitting unused for months. The smell usually goes away quickly. If the smell persists or smells like burning plastic or wiring, it should be inspected.
Is it dangerous if my breaker keeps tripping?
Circuit breakers are designed to protect your home from electrical overloads and potential fires. If a breaker trips frequently, it usually means a circuit is overloaded or there may be a wiring issue that should be inspected.
How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be upgraded?
Older electrical panels may not have the capacity needed for modern appliances and devices. Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, or the need for additional circuits may indicate it’s time for an upgrade.
Can I run multiple appliances on the same circuit?
Yes, There are three types. Overhead only, Underground only, and Overhead/Underground combination bases. However, combination boxes are not recommended for Underground installations because of their limited wire space.
What are signs of electrical problems in a house?
Common signs include flickering lights, breakers that trip often, burning smells, buzzing outlets, warm switches, or outlets that stop working.
How old is too old for an electrical panel?
Many panels older than 30–40 years were not designed for modern electrical demand. Some older panels also have known safety issues and may need replacement.
Should outlets feel warm?
No. Outlets and switches should not feel warm during normal operation. Warm outlets can indicate loose wiring or overloaded circuits and should be inspected.
When should I call an electrician?
If you notice flickering lights, burning smells, frequent breaker trips, buzzing outlets, or warm switches, it’s a good idea to have your electrical system inspected by a licensed electrician.
